How to Catch a Leaf

The art of the catch

Catching a falling leaf sounds simple — and it is. But there is an art to it. Here is everything you need to know to make your first (or best) catch this autumn.

01

Choose your moment

Peak leaf-fall happens on breezy days in mid-autumn. Look for trees with leaves just beginning to turn — they fall more readily than fully dried ones.

02

Find your spot

Stand beneath a canopy of trees and look up. Let your eyes track individual leaves as they detach. Pick one and follow it.

03

Be patient

Leaves drift unpredictably. Resist the urge to lunge — instead, move slowly toward where the leaf is heading, not where it is.

04

Use both hands

Cup your hands slightly and let the leaf come to you. A gentle catch is better than a grab — you want to feel it land, not crush it.

05

Celebrate every catch

Whether it is your first or your fiftieth, every caught leaf deserves a moment of recognition. Hold it up. Look at it. Make your wish.
